CranioSacral Therapy PDF Print E-mail

WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY?

In response to stress and trauma at the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual levels the body's tissues contract. When unprocessed shock is severe enough the tissues remain contracted and the trauma becomes embodied. Any stresses, strains, tensions or traumas which have been stored by the body in this way, will restrict the body's functioning and may give rise to health problems over the years. These effects may be physical (back pain, migraine or digestive disorders), emotional (anxiety or depressive disorders) and mental (lack of concentration, lack of motivation).

Embodied stress and trauma shows up in the way the CranioSacral Motion is expressed within the body. Therapists are trained to feel this subtle distortion of motion and use it to identify areas of restriction or congestion. Using CranioSacral techniques the therapist provides an opportunity for the body to let go its restrictive pattern and return to an easier mode of functioning. Embodied trauma will display itself either as alarm, where the individual is caught in a fight or flight pattern, or as shock, where the individual is frozen into a contracted and possibly disassociated state.

BENEFITS OF CST

The benefits of CST are not restricted to individuals who are ill or who have any particular symptoms, but as therapy frees the energy which the body previously used to maintain tissue contractions an increased level of energy is made available. The alleviation of life's stresses and the increased sense of vitality and wellbeing that CST can bring are welcome to most people at any time.

THE THERAPEUTIC PROCESS

The therapist will use various "listening posts" along the body to establish the potency of the CranioSacral Motion, thereby determining the body's needs and requirements for therapy. By feeling the differential within the rhythm the therapist is able to target areas were flow is disrupted and will work in these areas to restore the flow. This may take more than one session as the body adjusts and heals at it's own pace, which needs to be respected. During therapy there will be a deep sense of relaxation as well as awareness of feelings of heat, tingling and pulsations in those areas where the therapist is working.
